Financial support for the church
'God loves a cheerful giver': Scripture invites us to regularly to give a proportion
of our income to the Lord to be used in the upkeep and outreach of the church (1
Corinthians 16:2; 2 Corinthians 9:7). In St Andrew's Church we aim to be wise stewards
by offering several ways in which members can give.
- Gift Aid (has taken the place of covenanted giving). The Inland Revenue rewards the
commitment of charitable tax-payers by refunding (in this case to the church) the
tax they paid on their offering. I can provide you with a Declaration which you
sign. This states that offerings are coming out of taxed income and are to be regarded as
Gift Aid. As Gift Aid Secretary, it is my job to reclaim the tax for the church.
At present, income is taxed at 22% basic rate and attracts tax relief of 28% on
an offering. So £ 100 offered to St Andrews is worth £ 128 to the church. Tax at the higher rate
may be reclaimed, where applicable, by individuals through annual tax returns.
- Methods of giving (these apply both to Gift Aid giving and non-Gift Aid giving):
- Banker's Standing Order (yearly, half-yearly, quarterly, monthly)
- Weekly envelopes
These methods help us to be regular and faithful givers, as well as offering the church
a regular and predictable income with which to develop its ministries.
Gift Aid is a way of giving which helps St Andrew's, St Andrew's. It costs us nothing,
but results in very worthwhile extra income. I would encourage those who pay tax
to give this method of giving their serious consideration.
I would also encourage non tax payers, even though you are not eligible to give by
Gift Aid, to consider regular giving by one of the methods described above.
I will be glad to send forms or to call in person to talk this over with you.
