A group of enthusiastic volunteers read the Bible passages in our services each Sunday. They read with clarity and conviction and the time of quiet as the congregation reflects on what they have heard is a significant moment in the service. We're always happy to draw in new readers to the reading rota, even for a short time. The reading team is constantly refreshed and renewed by those who come to join us.
Every three months I produce a new list detailing the Sunday services and the two readers allocated. Sometimes there are mid-week and extra services included. Usually the first reader takes the Old Testament passage and the second, the New Testament reading. But things are flexible and readers can decide between themselves what they would like to do. People let me know preferences and dates and if there is a problem, people on the reading team make alternations and swaps, or I do so myself.
If you're new to St Andrews, you might like to listen to the way the readings are done and then, if you would like to contribute in this way, contact Bob Gillies, the rector, or myself. I'm usually out with the children during the service and join in coffee afterwards. Even if the rota has been drawn up, there are always opportunities to read, filling in for someone in the short term, or joining a later rota.
